How important is annual cleaning of pellet stove?

My husband does not believe pellet stoves need to be professionally or thoroughly cleaned. That it is a big con to get people to spend money.
My husband bought a 3 yera old used "englander" pellet stove from someone on Craig's List. It doesnt have an ash pan and some of the other niceties that I saw in some of the much more expensive pellet stoves. This is going to be our only source of heat in our small (910 square feet) apartment (no insulation). I think we should get this pellet stove some maintenance before running. But maybe I am wrong. Any advice

You can download a user manual here. Most mechanical devices require some kind of maintainance. New England can get very cold in the winter.

Pellet stoves should receive annual maintenance to assure that they are working properly and to extend their life. If stove was bought used and is missing parts, then it should definitely be serviced.
