Convert Gas Fireplace to Wood

My son just bought a house built in the 1990s that has a gas insert in what was once a wood-burning fireplace. Apparently, the previous owners didn't like the cost of operating the fireplace and capped the gas line and disconnected the electricity to the switch. My son wants to convert this setup back to its previous wood-burning capability. Can anyone tell me what would be involved in doing this; is it a DIY job or should a professional be hired; if so, what type of professional (can a chimney sweep handle it?). Thanks in advance for your help.

The gas insert will have to go, and I would definitely recommend a pro look at your situation. It could be they ran SS chimney pipe for the gas inside the flue, which would make a difference if you use wood or gas. Just too many variables to answer definitely on a forum. I work with a sweep locally who also installs inserts, etc., so if you find one that does both, a sweep would be a fine choice. Good luck and let us know how it goes.
