Automatic on?

Have a propane fireplace, approx 10 years old with a standing pilot. The fireplace "turns on" via a standard light switch and the fan is controlled by a dimmer rotary switch. Came home and the fire was on, the switch was off. Changed out the switch and still no change - there's no operation using the switch. Guessing something electronic in the internal switch/valve. Ideas?

If you look on the gas valve, you will probably find three electrical connections marked Th, TH/TP and TP

Look for wires connected to the TH and TH/TP connections that should be for the switch.

Disconnect one of them and see if the burner shuts off. If it does, something is shorting the wires together before the switch.

If the burner remains on, you have a bad gas valve that needs to be replaced by a competent repairman.
