Hi jmk,
First lesson when you burn wood, don't hesitate to utilize your tax dollars by calling the fire department. After they determine there is no risk to your home and have provided as much insight as they can, then you can go looking for draft issues or other solutions. This is especially true when everything has been working and now you small smoke.

The draft inside a chimney is normally up and out. Smoke in a crawl space would concern me. Talk to the fire department and see what they recommend first.

Welcome to the forums! Have you cleaned the ash collection area? Is there a separate exterior clean out door? Once it is cleaned out you should be able to see if there are any cracks. You can pour water in the area (not a lot) and see if it seeps down, showing you have cracks. Is the chimney brick, teracotta, or metal lined? Of course smoke will permeate where you least expect it. Let us know about the ash collection area.
