You can buy a metal chimney brush to fit the exact size and shape of your flue and the threaded rods to push it up with.
However, this is a VERY messy job with a lot of fine soot that can billow out all over your room and you also really need a specially-filtered shop vac to handle it, clean the firebox, etc.
I don't know what this stuff costs, but we can get a chimney cleaned here by a professional chimney sweep for $65, including a video inspection afterwards. A second chimney at the same residence costs $30 more.
If you burn a lot of fires, and can see an 1/8" of creosote buildup or more on your flues, you should clean the chimney every year.
(Some people say to clean them if you can't see the color of the flue.)
Good Luck!
