Loose bricks on top of fireplace and potentially new chimmney liner

Four or five bricks on the top layer of my fireplace came loose during mantle removal. Bricks are in good shape, but need to be secured back down. These are not getting a ton of heat but still some. What adhesive would work best or what is the best process to fasten these down? I bought some liquid nails and think this should work???

Also my home inspector said I MAY need a new chimmney liner. Is this a DIY job? How can I really tell if I need a new liner? I suspect if I call someone to inspect it, they will certainly say I need a new one... Thanks.

I would use type N mortar to reattach the bricks. Not construction adhesive. Bags of mix are available at most home centers and all you have to do is add water.

I would say chimney lining is a job best left to professionals.
