Pilot light will not stay lit

I have a Superior FV5 gas natural gas fireplace. The pilot light stays on when in the "pilot" position but goes out when I turn the knob to "on"

Welcome to the forums.

There is a pilot generator that sits in the pilot flame and generates a small electrical voltage that keeps the valve open for the pilot. This same generator supplies power to open the main valve. If the pilot flame is not strong enough there will not be enough voltage generated to open both valves.

The typical problem is that the pilot orifice gets plugged or the pilot tube gets spiders in it and their webs block the gas and the air. So make sure there is a healthy pilot flame and that fully engulfs the generator tube.
