15 bucks to paint it. friend had a guy doing some work around windows and they said chimney needs painted or HOA may get on their butt.

just wanted to make sure its ok to paint the steel and i'm assuming they have special paint

How far is the chimney pipe from the furnace? is it just where it protrudes from the roof?

furnace is on 1st floor. pipe runs almost straight up except one bend i think. through attic and out roof. unsure of distance.

Galvanized metal that protrudes out of the roof gets painted all the time [including chimney flues] If it's fairly new galvanized [no rust] it's often best to paint them with latex house paint. If there is rust or most of the galvanized has worn off it's best to apply an oil base primer and then use latex or oil paint for the top coat.

ok ty I just wanted to make sure he's not scamming 15 bucks out of her. I wasn't aware people regularly painted them but given the low temps of gas, nothing to worry about except the sun I guess

Not everyone paints them but I've worked for builders or where the HOA required every house to have all the roof vents painted, usually a color that matches the roof color [or close]
