Does anyone know what this hole is for?

Does anyone know the purpose for this hole in the side of the wood-burning fireplace in my basement? Is there a way I can cover it? I'd like to prevent my cat from being able to jump inside. Thanks!Name: File_000 (2).jpg

Welcome to the forums! How old is the house. It is possible it is a cool (not fresh) air intake for a blower. Where does it go? Can you shine a light in it to see?

Is that the only hole or vent? Does it turn after going in so far?

From what I can see looking straight back, there's just a brick wall (so I'm guessing a side of the fireplace). The house was built in 1950, and we have a gas fireplace above it on the next level sharing the chimney.

Can you reach in there and tell if it turns or just stops? You could use a coat hanger [or whatever] if you don't feel comfortable sticking your arm in there.

IF you are using this fireplace as a wood burner, it can't share the same flue with the one above it. Are you certain there aren't two flues? Big safety hazard if not.

it is only the depth of the fireplace as far as I can tell... it's on an interior wall, so it doesn't lead to outside or anything. There's a closed off pipe on the other side of the wall, so I'm wondering if maybe it was a compartment for ashes or some such. hoping i can fashion some sort of screen for it, because it seems like most ash dump doors are for square or rectangular openings.

I wonder if it was some sort of system for circulating heat captured from the masonry. Most I've seen where above the firebox. I doubt there would be any issues if you blocked it off.
