How to uninstall chimney pipe

I was asked to uninstall the old chimney in the attic and through the ceiling, but I can't figure it out. I removed the brackets that connect the pieces together, then tried twisting but nothing is moving. Is there something I'm missing?

Is hearth extension size based on raw opening or door opening?

Hey guys.. Got a 38"x32" masonry fireplace (opening)... I'm doing subfloor in the room and need to figure out hearth extension size. I'm in Illinois if that matters at all... but on looking at codes, it appears that for any fireplace with an opening over 6' square, the hearth extension is supposed to be 20" extended outward and 12" extended to the sides. That's going to look excessively huge in my living room. I'll do it if I must, but I was wondering if once the fireplace doors are installed if it effects what would be considered the "fireplace opening"? I'm looking at glass doors and most of them would shrink the "opening size" of my fireplace down below 6' square... in which case I could go with a 16"/8" hearth extension, which would fit my room size much better. So do I have to measure the raw opening as it is now to size a hearth extension? Or can I use the size of the finished opening with the doors that I plan to install right after my subfloor is done? Hi, I've inherited a fireplace with bowing brick work and hearth which is separating. This is late 1970's construction. I found a photo of a fireplace on the web, which appears to mirror my fireplace/chimney construction. Brick adjoins masonry around firebox and goes to ceiling on opposite side of framing. There's also the same structural steel piece above the firebox opening, visible in photo I found. (photo I found, not mine but appears to be similar construction) [IMG]http://photouploads.com/images/d9f8c6.jpg[/IMG] I'm wondering what precautions I should be taking in demo'ing the hearth and brick going up the wall. While I'm prepared to remove everything, replace with drywall and put in a mantle surround with slate or something on the floor in place of the hearth... I'm also wondering if I can safely remove bricks from the bottom up and possibly retain as much of the brick up the wall as possible, just re-brick the bowing portion only (should I expect the wall to collapse as lower bricks are removed, dumb question, huh... maybe something I can do to stabilize?). Or should I just plan on removing the bricks from top down, replace everything. Thanks for any insights folks have.
