Gas fireplace slowly dropping flame

Have had this issue since we moved into the house, and just want to know if its an actual issue or if its an intended function. Gas fireplace works fine, but the flames slowly get smaller , after maybe 20 min or so I have to turn it up to maintain the previous flame height, then it slowly drops over the next 20 or 30 minutes.

I didn't know if this was an intended thing maybe to combat some kind of overheating or if its a sign of an actual issue. If its an issue I will probably call a pro to come take a look but if its intended I wont worry about it. I did move a temp probe a little further from the fire to see if that was the cause, didn't seem to change anything.

It doesn't sound like a normal occurrence.
I'd need a make and model to check further.
