Afterburning flame

I have a Napoleon propane fireplace (gds28) with a timer remote and when turn fireplace off I had a ball of fire come out from underneath by the control valve. It burnt for about a second and I was able to open access and immediately turn gas valve to off. While doing it there was a bit of flame still lingering around the control valve. Nothing got damaged but got a scare. Also have a strong propane smell from around control. Checked fittings and they seem to be tight. Can't budge them. What could this be? Stove is about 15 years old and currently hooked to a pig propane tank. Stove off right now as dont trust it to turn on. Any ideas as what could be? When it was running and on the pilot and flame were burning healthy and strong.

Welcome to the forums.

A strong smell of propane around the valve would indicate that the valve is possibly leaking. Something inside may have melted.

By code..... there should be a service valve outside the fireplace. Usually it's a Dante key valve.
