gas fireplace thermostat quit

We have a Vermont Castings Tara natural gas (direct vent) fireplace, from about 2001. It is connected to a millivolt type wall thermostat, which worked well until recently. Now, however, the thermostat has no effect. When the fireplace front knob is in ON position, the fire is on regardless of thermostat setting. I tested the thermostat with an ohm meter to determine that it does interrupt the circuit when off, and complete the circuit when on.

Would this be a thermopile issue?

Thanks!

Since the thermopile or pilot generator as some people call it, produces the power to open the gas valve the problem has to be in the wiring or the thermostat. Something is not opening the circuit and breaking the power to the gas valve.

Welcome to the forums.

If either the fireplace switch is on or the thermostat is on..... the fireplace will operate. That's pretty much normal.

You need to turn the fireplace switch off and then troubleshoot the thermostat.
When you short the thermostat wires.... the fireplace should operate.

I couldn't find any listing for a Vermont "Tara".

Hi Pete, and Steamboy,
Thanks for the reply. Correction to my post- the unit was made by Waterford in Ireland.
Weird thing is, the fire is on even with the thermostat wires disconnected.

How about with the switch on the fireplace off ?
If the red and gray wire are shorted together.... the burner runs.
Page 28 has the diagram of the burner wiring.
