How to light pilot on gas fireplace

My fireplace has a control knob with settings for "off", "ign", "low" and "hi" in that order. The knob is now set to "off". There is also a separate push button which I assume sends a spark. Is the "ign" setting the same as the "pilot" setting on most other systems? Do I turn the knob to "ign", then depress that knob and keep it depressed while I press the other button which sends the spark? Thanks!

Yes, keep depressed about 10 seconds after the pilot lights. If no spark check for a battery under the spark button.

Thanks Ray. You've broken through that brick wall.

If that unit hasn't been lit in a while it may take a little while to get the pilot to light.
You may also have to hold the button in for at least 30 seconds.
