Fireplace advice

OK, I'm stupid when it comes to a fireplace. Look at the pic and tell me what to do. I was thinking of buttering some ceramic tile and going around the front and top face, then building a wood mantel and decorative wood frame going up to the ceiling to match the kitchen cabinets.

What do i need to need to know for code clearances for the wood frame? what else can you advise me?

I'm going to put a gas heater insert in the fire box anyway.

Consult the fireplace insert manufactures specs for requirements of spacing of combustible material.

thanks, i found a place near here that sells these, so I talked with them. I should have just went there first. He said 1. get the measurements of the fireplace and firebox. 2. get the insert that will fit the firebox 3. like stated above, get the mfgr insert specs and follow the requirements. Then finish last.
