Maybe you have to clean out all plugged orifices.
I have found that a Turkey Pin (stainless steel pin used in kitchen for stitching shut the turkey cavity after it's stuffed with dressing) works well for this purpose.

So your description is to get the pilot lit, the wall switch should open the valve to turn on the flame!
The burner needs cleaning every few years, it can get clogged up with dirt and rust!

There are many holes in the burner that must remain clean. All the ones in the front are covered with embers. They need to be clear. I added a red arrow to your picture. That is where the orifice is and the air gets mixed to the gas. That opening in the burner is a perfect home for spiders. It would be best to remove the burner and clean all the holes, vacuum that air chamber and clean the orifice. The orifice will be a tiny hole in a brass fitting. It can be cleaned with a straight pic or a bristle from a wire brush.
If the burner is lighting at all..... the wall switch is ok and working.
