Adhesive for tile on a prefab fireplace

I removed my dated fireplace surround/mantle, so that now I have a 3x4 hole in the wall where a pre-fab zero clearance metal fireplace exists. It is not flush with the wall nor sqaured. Its sits appr 1/2" to an inch. I will screw 1/4" Hardibacker to the metal on the fireplace and then tile on the Hardiboard. To sqaure the Hardiboard with the wall, before screwing i will attempt to level it with adhesive between the fireplace and board.
QUESTION. I planned on using normal thin set mortar for squaring the board onto the fireplace as well as tiling onto the board. Is thin set the proper adhesive or is there something better for the heat of a fireplace?

Hello
Thin set is great but do use screws to help hold the hardy back in place.....Good Luck
