WANTED INFORMATION ON Fireplaces

We are building on to our home and want to include a fireplace. Does anyone have or know where to get fireplace designs and specifications? We are wanting to do the work ourselves.

Unsolicited advice:
Consult the building department (where ever: China, Taiwan, Philippines, Japan, Canada, Britain, Australia, India, Europe, U.S.A. ...) and your insurance company before purchasing the above. It's possible that you might be excluded from performing the work. It's also possible that your current idea of a fireplace (what ever that might be) is illegal.

Sunset Magazine publishes a less intensive "how to" book: "How to plan and build fireplaces". Sunset is online. If a local library exists, you may find a copy there along with relatd publications. Libraries generally have Code books behind the counter also.

You may benefit from reading the BIA technotes also. www.bia.org

If college or adult education is available inquire about owner/builder courses and/or general construction courses for the home owner.

Have fun.
Bye.

Fireplace Form

Your local library is very helpfull. Also look up fireplace forms to your firebox dimension (Size of fireplace).Steel forms with damper already in place take a lot of work out of building your fireplace.

fireplace

If your not a mason ,I would'nt try biulding a fireplace by yourself.
The smallest crack or hole in the mortor could lead to a fire down the road. There are codes for proper air space between the fire place roughin and the flue and any wood framing.
Check with your local building inspector, before tackling this sort of job.

If you have no masonry experience I would not even consider this. This is a major project that needs to be safe and sound for you and your family - please consider a mason to do the work for you
