Fireplace

I moved into a house with two fire places,one upstairs one downstairs. My question is there is three rods that come out of the front of the fireplace upstairs and one more rod down stairs. there is two knobs to open the flute as well, one up one down. what are the rods for??if you need more info to answer let me know.

The chimney may have open/close caps controlled by the rods and wires going up to the top of the chimney.
Have you looked up there?

fire place

i've had my fireplaces cleaned and asked the guy who cleaned them what the rods are for and he wasn't sure either . he was inside the fireplace while i moved rods in and out and he said he could'nt see what they did

Within the brick face area on your fireplace,do you see anything that looks like a metal grate or vent?Is your fireplace a metal insert?The top control dampers usually have a pull chain hanging down -

there is nothing that looks like a vent on the fire place on the in side. can't see no chains either.

chimney and surrounding combustibles

I am finishing my basement. My chimney however runs right through the middle of the area I want to finish. I would like to finish / box in the chimney for a more finished look. I plan on leaving the side with the cleanout untouched however. My research suggests that I need to keep a 2" clearance between the chimney and any combustible material. Is this the case for me? I would like to bring my walls right up to the chimney surface without having a gap. It is hard to distinguish whether this requirement is for fireplaces and/or chimneys. In the basement, my furnace is the only thing that exhausts into the chimney. Also, when I view the construction of the house around the chimney, I notice combustible materials going right up to it. If the 2" req. applies here as well how come I see what I see? Unless the older codes (1950's) did not req. the same clearances.Read More

I have a brick fireplace that has been covered with sheetrock. I would like to remove the sheet rock at the fireplace opening and place an insert inside the opening. My question is do I have to remove all the sheet rock- or just punch a hole at the center and remove the sheet rock until I get to the end of the brick.
