ceiling joists in basement

I noticed that the ceiling joists in the basement alot of them are showing a black residue in bedded in the wood, could this be mold?? How do i check?
Basement is dry and i have never had water problems. The ceiling is totally unfinished and is open to fresh air. Could it be that the black mold is imbedded in the wood from when it was built in 1987 and is slowly spreading?
any help would be greatly appreciated !!

Sounds like mold, but can't say w/o seeing it. I'd wash it down with a 50/50 solution of bleach & water, that'll know the mold down.

I wonder if its just the tree sap that sometimes run from lumber then dries?
