Question raised floor in bedroom (Loft)

I've just bought a home that has very high vaulted ceilings - I haven't closed on the house yet so I can't give exact dimensions (sorry) but...

In my daughter's room I'd like to build a 'second story' - basically a platform with a railing that we MAY put her bed on... but most likely it will hold her desk and a shelf with books, games, and toys

what should I be considering here? is this just a dumb idea?

the room is on the second story and I was thinking I'd put a ledger against the interier, load bearing wall, as well as the 2 other walls. In addition I'd have a beam across the front bolted into the side walls and with a central post (4x4 or 6x6?)

any thoughts?

Isn't what your're contemplating, often refered to as a loft?

How high to finished floor and how do you get there?

7' from th base floor to the bottom of the loft (or the 'new' ceiling) + whatever the thickness of the floor should be

probably an 8' span from the load wall

as to access, I was thinking almost ladder-like steps - wide and deep steps but at a steep angle
