hi l have a old house and the old kitchen floor is shot and so are the joists.
I am going to ripe up the old floor and joist and replace with new joist and floor my question is what size of floor joist should l go with .
there is no basament under the kitchen it is an add on so there is only a dirt floor under it. :

Allan36,
Unsure what you have now and this is going to be an undertaking. I would recommend getting a professional out to look at it to determine the current conditions and recommendations for improvement.
Replacing what is there now with similar may not be up to Code. Other issues would be accessibility to do what needs to be done.
This should be done by obtaiing a Building Permit of course.
Hope this helps!

Allen,
Thanks for the info. That explains why it may need some help. I would still suggest getting someone to look at this. True it should have a building permit to ensure that the repairs are up to Code and I know to some who will ask why?
I have to say that this type of repair can effect the homes structural integrity and thus failure to do this right could lead to hazardous conditions. I stress that a professional should be consulted.
