Nailing pattern for built up header
Are there rules of thumb for where and how much to nail when putting together a built-up header.
For instance, if I'm doing a 2x6 header 35" wide, would I just nail around the edges and maybe a line down the middle (length) as well essentially doing a 3-nail-across the width?
Down the length, how often should I nail?

Nail Pattern
Yes, there is a nail pattern. It is a diagional pattern at a 45 degree angle. For instance let us say that you start in the upper left hand corner with your first nail. The next angle would be at a 45 degree angle 6" away, and the next would be another 6" away on the bottom, then back up toward the top on another 45 degree diagional. Up and down the length of the board. Now in your case you are using 2x6's, so the angle will remain the same, but your nails will be 3" away instead of 6". Now when you are done , flip your header over, and run a row of nails about 12" apart down the center from one end to the other. Hope this helps. Good Luck

Is this right? Are there two corners that don't get nailed on the "pattern" side then?
Also, I'm just curious what size lumber your reply was originally for, given the 6" spacing between nails?

I used them for long span headers, typically over 16'+ overheard garage doors.
Simply put, they're constructed and look just like OSB plywood/chip board except they are 1 3/4" thick and width upto 11 1/4" commonly stocked in home centers. Get 2 LVL's and nail them together and it's as thick as a 2x4 jack that they sit on so everything comes out peachy inside and out, otherwise you cut spacers and space out the LVL's so they're the thickness of 2x6's if your wall framing is newer.
Last year I was getting 20' LVL's for about $65/each. More than a 2x12 yes, stronger than a 2x12 over a long span yes, worth it for me for long term apperance/function-absolutely!!
