Replace subfloor or and underlayment

I am redoing my kitchen. The original subfloor is 1/2" plywood. I want to put hardwood flooring down. I know the subfloor is not thick enough, even though it looks as though the adjacent dining area has the hardwood flooring nailed down on the existing 1/2" subfloor. Should I add another layer of plywood, or replace the subfloor with 3/4" plywood and nail the hardwood on this? Thanks

Although it would solve (or at least not cause as much of a problem) the raised height issue caused by the 1/2" and 3/4" plywood, removing the subfloor can quickly become a messy job. It'll be under the cabinets, walls, etc. I'd put down 5/8" plywood and go with that, but I'm not a professional so don't entirely bank on that.

Adding layer

Im thinking thats what I will do. Another big question I have is whether two layers of plywood will be as strong as one new thick one.
