Kitchen soffit how to (Framing a soffit)

I am trying to build a bulkhead (soffit?) above my kitchen cabinets. there is a 4 1/2 inch space there. I would like it to extend out about 1/2 inch to be close to even with the doors. So the question is, what is the easiest way to do this. Any suggestions on how to build it (i.e. build it first, put cabinets up first) would be greatly appreciated.

I'd definitely put the cabinets up first - that way you know exactly the space you're trying to fill.

Build the soffitt face to fit the opening - measure at several points to be sure the opening is the same size at all points.

Attach several 'legs' to the back of the soffitt extending back over the top of the cabinets.

Slip the completed unit into place and screw through the top of the cabinet into the 'legs' to secure the piece.
