Roof Rafter Span question

Are the Roof Rafter Spans given in the 2003 International Building Code book tables 2308.10.3 for the horizontal distance of the rafter or the sloped distance of the rafter?

I spoke to

one of the PE's here and he THINKS that it is the sloped distance but isn't completely sure. That is the safest assumption anyhow

Me thinks it's the horizontal distance a rafter SPANs. I mean, that is what is always called "span" in roof framing. BTW, 2old2fit, as long as you have that book handy, could you do me a favor please and look up the rafter size for a 6 foot (horizontal ) span, 16" OC, 6 in 12 pitch roof with minimum live and dead loads? Please? I suspect I can use 2X4 rafters, but want to be certain. Thanks

I finally found a website that says it is the horzontal distance not the sloped distance.

A 2x4 rafter 16"oc, Live load=20psf, Dead load=10psf l/X=180 can span 9'-10".
The spans vary depending on wood species and grade. The above is for Doug Fir #2 and Southern Pine #2. Didn't see any species listed for less than 6'.
