moving stairs

Stairs currently end in the basement with you three feet from the wall. We plan on moving the stairs back four feet.

We have a steel beam across the center of the room running the same direction as the stairs and ending under the stairs we will need to cut. I am not sure what to use to cut the beam. We will be framing up load bearing walls on both sides of the stairs to pick up the load.
Also, how are the stair stringers attached at the top.

Thanks for the help.

Steel beam cutting - oxyacetylene cutting torch should do it. Will generate a fairly lengthy spark stream.

Take off the stop step and riser to see how the stringers are attached. That way you will know what you have and whether it was done correctly.
