Moving support for basement stairs
I am finishing my basement and I am looking to put make a storage closet under the stairs. I have 3 stairs then a platform and then the stiars turn 90 degrees and there are 10 more stiars. The top section of 3 stairs is secured to the floor joist, and has a 2x4 supporting the floor joist underneath. I want to move the supporting 2x4 back about 5 inches. I am wondering if the floor joist really needs any support? The 2x4 I want to move doesn't seem to be supporting anything since I am able to wiggle it.

As you ascend a stairway, the portion of the step that faces you is called the riser. The portion that your foot lands on is the tred.
If both of these are present, they are supported by a stringers, which in turn is supported/attached by/to a platform, in turn supported by a cripple wall.
If you want to remove a support, you will need to replace it with a header of some sort.
