framing a dropped ceiling

I am interested in ideas on how to frame a dropped ceiling across the entirety of my first floor. I am looking to drop the ceiling with 2x6's to hide plumbing and electrical lines. How do I best secure the 2x6's to the joists?

When you say "dropped" ceiling, are you referring to a suspended ceiling, or just lowering your ceiling and installing sheetrock? How much drop are you looking at?

Secure vertical 2x4s from the joists above and then secure your 2x6s to the vertical 2x4s. The 2x6s should be spaced a maximum of 16" apart.

Ceiling

2x6's are 5 1/2 inches wide. Will this lower the ceiling too far?
