Brad or Finish nailer to put on old baseboards?

I am installing 3/4 inch thick (8 inch high if that matters) gumwood baseboard on an old house. The plaster walls do not go all the way down to the floor, so if I used a 2" brad nail it would only go into the stud 1/2 and inch. I've heard they are also flimsy and with the 80 yr old, very hard wood my house was framed with, they would not hold. What do you guys use for similiar situations? Brad or finish nails? Thanks for the tips!

You should use a 15 or 16 ga. finish nailer with 2 1/2" long nails.
