Squeaky Floors
Squeaky Floors
We have an apartment built in 1982. The upper plywood Flores was originally nailed down. Now the Flores squeak real bad and it disrupts the people who live below. We want to screw down the floor to make it stop squeaking.
1. What type and size of screw should we use?
2. Is their such a thing as plastic coated screws which help hold the screw in place?

First and foremost, unless you own the building, don't attempt this. It is the responsibility of the landlord/owner to maintain the building, and it could jeopardize your contract if you mess with the structure.
Assuming you own the building.....what type floors do you have, hardwood, pine, carpet? If the carpet is pulled and all that is showing is the subflooring, then using 2" ceramic coated decking screws directly into the joists will help alleviate the floor movement. Post back so we can help further.

If there is carpet, I used a product designed to go through carpet and then the screws were scored so they broke off at exactly the right spot so you didn't step on them. I believe it was called Squeek No More.
