raising a ceiling?

I have a 1 1/2 story new englander, it was built in 1930. It is ballon framed. The upstairs ceiling is very low it is about 6'. i looked in the attic today to check it out, the rafters are 2x6's at the peak the rafters just butt together there is no ridge board. the ceiling joist are 2x4's nailed to the rafters. Can i saftely raise the ceiling joist up to where the collar ties are? It is a basic gable roof. Thanks Jeff

This is a question that only a structural engineer could answer. There are a great many variables here, and there is no way that anyone here could give you your answer. I could do it, but I won't because of the many variables and I may steer you in a wrong direction. Good Luck
