ceramic tile

I am wondering if I can put ceramic tile over particle board covered with vinyl linoleum? If not, can I put 1/2 inch plywood subfloor right over the linoleum, or would I need to remove it first?

Neither is going to give you the structure required for ceramic. Menards carries a tile with a rubber/plastic backing on it that goes down without mortar. Also has its own flexible grout for floors with a little flex. A little spendy, but a lot less work in a situation like this.

Why can't you remove the vinyl and PB? What's under the PB for your subflooring, what's your joist size, unsupported span, and spacing on center?

Particle board is very unusual for a underlayment or subfloor in my area. Vinyl is typically laid on 1/4' luan. Are you sure that you are seeing particle board and not luan or OSB?
