Subflooring a basement

I am in the process of reworking a finished basement. We had a leak and need to remodel. My question is is , when making a subfloor can I just use either 2x1 or 2x4 for framing and 1/2 plywood. I want to put carpet down. But am afraid the floor will be too cold if I don't put something.

I have read that furring strips, 1x or 2x material to put down under plywood is a good option for insulating a cold basement floor. You can put some sort of polystyrene?? insulation under it as well.
