top plating a versalam?

I am putting in a versalam to support a loft in place of a wall i am taking out. the header joist lies flush with the current wall and will be flush with the new versalam. That means that the entire width of the header joist and an additional 1.5" of each of the joists will rest on the versalam. Do i need any sort of top plate or can i place the versalam directly under the joists?

You don't have to cap the lam, but you should sister them if more than one piece is used together, so you can fasten it all together as a unit.
