Hole is subfloor...

I have a hole in my subfloor in between two joists. What is the easiest way to fix it if it is in a high traffic area?

Welcome to the forums!

It would be best if you can add additional 2xs [to the floor joists] to support the patch piece of plywood. You might cut the hole out a little larger to make this easier.

If that's not feasable, you could insert a longer 2x thru the hole and screw it to the sub floor on each side of the hole and then attach your patch piece to it.

Or cut back to the center of both joists( might as well cause few holes in subfloors are a nice square patch). Make sure to support between joists, either with a 2x or with the plywood used to patch( you probably will have some left over)and screws on 6" spacing or better.
