Strange subfloor material

Hello

I'm starting a flooring project, and well, I've already hit a wall. I live in a three story townhome, and though I had all plywood subfloors based on what I saw around vents and stairs. I started to pull up carpet today, and what I have on the 2nd floor (and only the 2nd floor) is something I can't find any information on.

The floor isn't wood, and it's not concrete. It has a consistency about the same as wood, but it looks like it was poured in. The carpet strips are nailed to it. I can drive a nail in it about he same as wood, but small bits will chip out.

I'm guessing this is some kind of an insulating floor material. Ultimately I need to nail hardwood to this floor, and I'm not sure if this material is acceptable for that.

I'm going to take some pictures and post them.

Perhaps this is a gypcrete floor. If so, you can not nail directly to the floor. A floating engineered wood floor would be better. Install vapor retarder even though on 2nd floor and manufacturer's recommended underlayment.

Here is a bit of the stuff that chipped off...

Here is a transition from wood stairs to the stuff...

Here is how it looks where I pulled up the carpet. It's definately not in boards...

Wow, that looks like it might be it... that's really unfortunate since I already bought the standard tounge and groove naildown stuff. There are currently wood floors glued down in the kitchen, but I'm not sure if they poured the stuff over that far... so far I can only confirm that it's directly over where the garage is.
