floor joist reinforement

We are remodeling the bathroom and it requires that we move the heating register. We have a forced air system. To do that requires that one floor joist be cut....How can we reinforce the joist...? This is on the second floor.

Welcome to the forums! If you can gain access below the floor, cut the joist back at least 2" shorter than the required space for the register. Then, between the two adjacent joists secure a spanner joist across the end of the joist you cut and attach it to the two joists. This will spread the weight from the end of the cut joist to the two adjacent joists. Be sure to give yourself enough room to install the register and the ductwork.

What chandler said. Keep in mind that that spanner joist needs to be doubled up and use the appropriate hangers as needed.
