Framing in a new window, existing framing is not a joy to behold!
Currently redoing the walls in one of the rooms of my 1900's house. Planning on redoing the window, but the framing goes below the floor so im not sure how i would do this.
Here are photos, highlighting the existing framing and 'framing'(seems like scraps of wood just thrown in randomly) in white and the 'rough opening' for the window in red.
What i dont understand is how you would frame this. The ceiling joists above run parallel with this wall. Does this mean that this wall isnt supporting anything? Supporting the roof? The framing goes past the ceiling up the side of the house.

the framing is such a cluster... Any suggestions? I would like to keep the existing width of the window

What are you looking to do? Enlarge the opening for a larger window? Shrink the opening for a smaller window? "Redoing" isn't very techincal, so let us know what your end result should be.

I wanted to keep the width, and add some height to the window.
what is confusing is that there is no visible header or footer
this is a quick paint sketch of what i think a framing possibility could be:

I cant make a wider opening because there is a chimney right in front of the next closest stud to the right

It seems as if you have "baloon" framing. Meaning that the studs go from the bottom floor to the roof. In that case, the joists are attached to the longer studs via a ledger or other means as needed. It appears that you have room to raise/lower the window without any structural integrity being compromised. I would prefer to see a header of some type over the windows if possible. Who knows why they added the short/random wood members; possibly to save(?) materials??? Good luck!
