The luan that you often see being sold as underlayment may not automatically be the type that is suitable for your floor. Underlayment is often put down with staples, using a 4" square nailing pattern. But be sure of the type you have... and whether it is compatable under your flooring. Sleeper is correct, but that doesn't mean you can't use it or no one else does. And yes, staples are fine as long as they are from a compressed air gun at least 1 1/2" long. Be sure to keep about every 2 inches on the perimeter and 6 inches in the middle.
The ramifications on choice of using the luan will really depend on what finished product you will be using on top of it.
