Using 2x6's for supporting post on LVL Beam.

I have a 19' span, and using three, 1 3/4"x11 1/4" LVL's for the distance. Would building up 2x6's be sufficient to use for the supporting posts?

I will have 2 posts, in-between the 19' span, and was going to use four 2x6's nailed together to create the support posts.

Thanks in advance!

For end jacks I like double 2x6's. For 19', unless you are driving a tank on it, you shouldn't need any mid span support. That's the beauty of LVL. Is this in your basement? How many floors will be supported by this beam?

yes, this is for the basement. It will be supporting 2 floors. However, half of the house is over a crawl space, that is seperate from the basement portion I am finishing. The whole house (2 floors) is appx 2600 sq ft. The basement section that I am finishing, is appx 950 sq ft. No planned tanks!

Thanks for the assistance.

If you feel you need mid span support, I would opt for a poured footing 12" square and 24" deep, install a post base and use a 6x6 rather than trying to manufacture a weaker form of the lumber. Laminating the 2x6's would be fine for a minimal beam, but vertically, I would opt for a solid post.

Sorry, I should have given more info in my first post. The span is 19', but we had to have the LVL cut into 2 pieces in order to get it in the basement. One solid piece 19' long was impossible. We have a 12' section and an 8' section, which is 20' total, but the last foot is buried into a wall. I need the mid span support because of the 2 LVL's meeting up and needing to joint together.

How would you laminate the 2x6's? Thank you.

Like I said, I would NOT laminate 2x6's, but use a 6x6 instead. If you feel you have to laminate the 2x6's, you would need to bolt them together at 3 or 4 places along their length. Again, more money spent on a post that costs less to buy ready to go.
I understand the multilple LVL's, and the need for the support, thanks. The one we did last week had a window in line with the triple 20' beam.....sweet.
You should bolt your LVL together with carriage bolts as well in a staggered array.
