i've purchased a raised bungalow with a garage below grade. the idea is to add a garage addition at grade level in the future with a master suite above. the garage will be at grade level, we will be gaining some much needed space. in said space (old garage) there is a jackpost right in the middle supporting an 8 x 4 (h x w) steel I beam.
my question is: by adding an identical sized i beam beside the existing, do i gain sufficient stucture to eliminate the jackpost? above the beam is the bedroom area with the roof structure above that. the span is 18'. headroom is an issue, which is the reason i don't want to replace the old i beam with a larger (taller) web.
any help is greatly appreciated

Welcome to the forums! All that you are adding, I would be surprised if your engineer would not recommend additional posts to support the existing beam. Definitely gain the expertise of a structural engineer to see exactly what you can and can't do.
