Should sideways stud be paired

I'm adding some new interior walls in the basement and I got the idea that I could cut away drywall on one side and install a sideways 2x6 where the end of the new interior wall would meet the existing wall. The 5.5" would provide ample support for the drywall on either side, and a place to anchor the new 2x4 wall.

What I am wondering is if I might run into warping/stability issues this way. Should the sideways 2x6 be paired with a stud that is oriented "normally"?

Now that I think about it I guess once the new interior wall is in place and attached it would really stop that sideways stud from warping or going anywhere.
