Staircase removal.

I am slowly remodeling a 1900's side by side duplex back into a single family.

Currently I am making connecting the 2nd floor. Basically cutting in doors from the right side, into the two bedrooms on the right side.

What this entails is removing or at minimum covering up the staircase that formerly led up to the left bedrooms. I'm not worried so much about the adding the support for the 3x8 area that will "seal" off all the bedrooms to the left side.

My concern is that I want to remove all of the staircase and wall to make for more room in the room below the bedroom. All that exist is what seems to be pretty loose 2x4's that may or may not be supporting a little bit of the floor above.

The joist on the left side run from side to side and rest on a 1x4 ledger that is notched into the balloon framing. Except for the stairwell, where they stop and are nailed to a 2x12 that spans about 5 joist.

Again, not worried about the supporting the newly added subfloor, I am more concerned the support for the area around it that will have nothing below it and only 3'~ 2x12's nailed to it.

If you need pictures to better explain.. I can take some and post.

thanks

There are 4 studs I think that may be holding some of the load.

View from the room below.

There is a stairwell below that was cut in/added at some point in history.
My thoughts are to frame the area where the 4 studs and stairs are and just put in some storage. I want to avoid unused space.

Also, can anyone determine what type of wood the framing is?
