plywood over old softwood planks

Hi,
my old sub-floor in the second floor bedroom consists of 5" planks. I was advised to glue and screw 1/2" plywood on top of it. I'm undecided about the actual floor, but currently leaning toward pre-finished, T&G engineered hardwood.

Most discussions about glue deal with installations over concrete. What would be the right choice of glue under the plywood (if any) and under the floor?

Any plywood you add an top of a subfloor should never be glued, since tearing it up someday would destroy the subfloor. You should screw your planks, set all nails deeper with a nail set, then add the plywood thickness of your choice, screwed to the planks only, not the joists.
