uneeded house jack?

New house I moved in to has a house jack 10 inches away from block wall... it is in the basement floor concrete as well. is there a good reason why this needs to be there? the span to the next beam is 10ft from the block wall to the main beam with the usual supports.

Maybe. Any chance of asking the previous owner (I would have done so before buying, but...)?

I doubt that jack post was put there just for the heck of it although that does seem to be an odd location.

Can you clarify this: it is in the basement floor concrete as well ?

What room is above this beam? While unusual for it to be so close, there could have been some [very] heavy object above it and the owner was just being cautious.

Ok. You're better off leaving it as other have said. If you are wanting to clean up the look of the basement then you can always build a column around it
