Cutting studs to install niche
Hi everyone, I am trying to install a niche in a wall in my master bathroom but there are two studs 5" O.C. right in the middle of it. The wall is perpendicular to the support beams. The opening is 10" x 22". Can I cut them or do you think I should install it somewhere else? I don't understand why they would be so close together so I am a little nervous. Thank you in advance for your help.

If that wall is perpendicular to your ceiling joists it is possible that it is load bearing. Seeing studs close together could mean that there is a load there requiring additional support or maybe they installed an extra stud by mistake during construction. You may be OK to cut the joists but I would not without investigating further. Safest would be to simply relocated the nook to an open bay so you don't have to cut studs.

The fact that they are turned sideways tells me they are probably just there as a wall to hold up drywall but it's impossible to say from seeing a picture of a hole in a wall with 3 studs!

If the ceiling joists are parallel to this wall then in all likelihood you can cut them out. I would cut them 1 1/2" below and 1 1/2" above your drywall cutout... then cut a head and sill that is about 4" wider than your drywall cutout is wide... nail that to the top and bottom. then add vertical studs in between than on each side.

If the studs are on their sides as previously mentioned, I would abandon the idea of a niche as it would not be deep enough to accommodate anything worth while. Niches are relatively tight when you do a traditional stud bay with normally orientated studs. Studs turned on side will give you almost nothing to create a niche out of.

After second look and comparing the nail/screw sizes it looks like they are not turned.
What niche is being installed?
They make niches out of foam, if you have an available corner you can just glue in place, dont have to go into the wall!
