attic storage

Question on attic storage.
I need some extra storage. I have 3 car garage with the 2 car 22ft x22ft. There is a wall separating the 3rd garage measuring 12x22. I cant get any load bearing support from the 2 car garage but would like to add maybe 2x8 joist to the current 2x6 joist in the 3rd garage to give me some load bearing capacity. The ceiling joist run perpendicular with both garages so the 2x8s would only have to span 12 ft. Complete roof is hand framed with ceiling joist being 2x6s in the 3rd garage and 2x8s in the 22 ft. garage. Any suggestions as to whether this will be safe?

Creating storage as you describe always involves judgement as to what goes up there. It is unfortunate that we have to allow for the idiots that come after us but that has proven necessary.

You said "I cant get any load bearing support from the 2 car garage". If you could would it be beneficial? In some cases a center beam can be installed above the ceiling joists and given the extreme strength of modern engineered materials it might be an option.

Whenever I see a post on using attic space for storage I feel a need to inform the poster that storing things in an attic is pretty much the same as storing them in a shed. You will have the same temperature excursions, very hot in the summer and very cold in the winter as well as excursions of relative humidity. Attics are poor storage places for the most part.

In many cases what you are storing really needs to be tossed. My (former) wife insisted that she NEEDED to save all her clothes from junior high school to the present because, "My mother made these clothes!" Truth was that even IF she had been able to get into them she would not have worn them because they were far out of style. She also had to save every scrap of paper from junior high school on including the left over perforated strip that is left when tearing a page from a spiral-wound notebook. After our marriage she insisted on saving every single cardboard box that came through the door. It literally took me months to purge the attic of cardboard after our divorce and I had curbside recycling of cardboard at that house.

When I moved to my current house I vowed I would not build any sheds or attic storage nor would I rent a storage locker. It has been difficult at times to follow this self-imposed directive but I've lived her for almost twenty years and I haven't changed. My garage is pretty junked up at present, I haven't had the car inside for many years, but I could clear out the majority if the current state of my health allowed.

Thanks Bud for the considerate reply. I will look into the beam over the joist in the larger side of the garage before look at the smaller side.
