room-in-attic engineered truss spec

I purchased a 1200 sq/ft garage/workshop (30'x40') with a room in attic truss attic/storage area above. the "usable" attic area within the truss is 8'high x 10' wide.
my intention is to build a small studio type apartment above the garage.

I cannot find any engineering/specification documentation on the truss, however the truss is of 2x6 lumber 12" on center.
most builders I have asked say the 2x6 12" on center is suitable to sustain loads for a living area above?

just wanted to throw this same question out to the forum.
any feedback will be appreciated.

Impossible for us to say without the documentation of the truss, but there must be some reason they put them 12" on center. You wouldn't do that for storage alone I wouldn't think. Living space must be rated at 40# sf.
