Is Luan Needed over Sub Floor for Carpet Squares?

I have to roll a piano (presently on carpet & pad) on to an area I'd like to cover with carpet squares. I will have them secured down with carpet tape.

They are Shaw with a rubber back so they stay in place well.
Just finished another room with them.

My question is, should I put some luan down over the sub floor first?

If I get all the tack strips, staples, etc. out the sub floor will be smooth. I know it's strong enough as the same piano has been in this place previously.

So is there any need to cover the sub floor before placing the carpet squares on it?

Thanks.

If your subfloor is nice and smooth I'd put the carpet down without luan.

Luan is never recommended as an underlayment for anything. Clean your carpet once and it will delaminate.

Ok, thank you both. No luan then. Will make things simpler also.
